Trump Administration Lifts Sanctions on Milorad Dodik
This decision overturns restrictions that were originally imposed for actions seen as undermining the Dayton Peace Agreement, which concluded Bosnia’s conflict over two decades ago.
The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) confirmed the move but did not provide any reasoning for the decision.
Dodik was initially targeted in 2017 by the Obama administration for defying Bosnia’s Constitutional Court and hindering the Dayton peace accord.
At that time, the Treasury Department accused him of threatening the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
The Biden administration reinstated sanctions on Dodik in 2022.
Earlier this year, a court in Bosnia sentenced Dodik to one year in prison and prohibited him from engaging in politics for six years due to his refusal to comply with the authority of the leading international official supervising the enforcement of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement.
Dodik, recognized for his recurring secessionist statements, has frequently suggested that Bosnia either adopt a new political framework or pursue complete separation.
The 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement, which concluded the Bosnian War, structured Bosnia and Herzegovina as a nation consisting of two entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) and Republika Srpska (RS).
Nevertheless, differing interpretations and the execution of the agreement continue to generate disputes.
